My Story

This is a story I wrote over the summer since I had lots of time on my hands. I started writing this story after an unsual dream and once I put a part of it down on paper, I had to keep going on. It's a bit long and doesn't go into much detail but it's an interesting read. Enjoy!

Split Personality

It was in the middle of February; the snow was still piled up on the ground, and the same chilly air in the atmosphere. It was a Friday night, which usually meant hanging out with friends but today everyone had plans so here I was sitting on the couch with popcorn and watching some boring movie on T.V. The school year wasn’t exactly going so well for me, somehow I was losing focus very easily, wasn’t turning in my assignments on time, and I hardly had a proper social life. I had found an interest in Language Arts and had started writing a story, although I hadn’t completed the whole story I had let most people in school read it and they’d insisted I should write more but I was too busy catching up with homework.
I woke up suddenly realizing that I’d fallen asleep, dad had probably come home late last night and switched off the T.V. Suddenly the phone rang, I looked at the clock hanging on the wall, it was 6:30 in the morning.
“Who could be calling at this time?” I heard myself mumble as I picked up the phone
“Hello?” I said.
There was no response. As I was about to put the phone down, I heard a sinister laugh. I couldn’t tell if it’d come from the phone or from somewhere in the house but it had scared me a lot because I kept jumping all morning at the sound of anything loud. I finally calmed myself and checked the time again; it was 10:30 a.m. now and dad was still not up which was unlike him.
“Dad? Dad!” I called as I climbed up the stairs to his bedroom.
“Dad, its 10:30, don’t you want to wake up yet?” I asked but to my surprise he wasn’t there. His bed was made and everything was just like he’d left it yesterday.
Maybe he came to check up on me last night and then went back to work, I thought. Yeah, that made sense and maybe he was the one who had called earlier. So I tried calling him on his cell and in his office but it wouldn’t connect properly. There’s probably a network problem, I’ll try later I thought to myself.
I made myself pancakes for breakfast and finished up cleaning. As I finished my homework, there was still no sign of Dad. Maybe I should go to his office and see if something’s wrong. In my bedroom, as I opened my closet, I felt the blood drain out of me.
“AHHHHHHHHH” I heard myself screaming and suddenly everything went blank.
When I woke up, I was in a different room. The walls were a baby blue and beside me was some sort of equipment. I realized I was in the hospital and suddenly everything came rushing back. Dad missing, the phone calls, the closet…THE CLOSET!!

“How are you feeling?” the doctor said
“How did I get here?” I asked ignoring the question
“ Your neighbour heard a scream and immediately called 911”
“Excuse me,” he said quickly turning away before I had the chance to say anything else.
As he left the room I remembered what had caused me to scream. It was dad’s body in the closet. His face was all scratched up, his arms seemed out of place and one of his eyeballs was missing. I shuddered at the scene replaying in my mind but the fact that hit me really hard was that my dad was dead!
“Hello, Ms. Ford, I’m Officer Mike Brown. If you are feeling better I’d like to ask you a few questions” the officer said
“About what?” I asked
“Your fathers death. Now if you could tell us exactly what happened”
I described to him everything that had happened, not leaving out a single detail. When he left, I saw that my story from Language Arts was lying beside the bed. I picked it up cautiously and started reading it. When I reached the last line, my eyes widened with fear. It had described word for word how Dad had died and the officer asking me question.
“How did this get here?” I asked as a nurse walked in.
“Oh, one of your friends, I think dropped it off” she said
“Do you know who?” I asked feeling apprehensive
“No, I’m sorry Ms. Ford but you should really get some rest” she said with a motherly tone to her voice. She gave me some sort of medicine, which made me feel woozy, and I fell asleep
“You will be able to go back home tomorrow, Ms. Ford. Do you have anyone to stay with you?” the doctor asked when I woke up again
“No” I replied, not paying much attention to what he said after.
When I was discharged, Mrs. Front was there to pick me up. She was my friend, Dana’s mom.
“ I figured you could stay with us for a few days and I’m sorry about you father” she said her eyes filled with sympathy
“Thank you” I said with no emotion in my voice
As we drove through the downtown area, I kept trying not to think about the story I’d found.
“Its just a coincidence!” I said trying to console myself
I had been in the house so many times and yet it looked new. Mrs. Front showed me into Dana’s room where I would now be sharing with her. When Dana got back from school, she talked about how everything at school was so weird and who was going out with whom; this was her way of trying to cheer me up. I appreciated her trying but all I could think about was how the story I had written had described the murder.
“Alex! There’s an officer here to see you” Mrs. Front said. I went downstairs to find Mike, that officer from the hospital, sitting on the couch.
“Hello, Alex, you seem better” he said
“Yea,” I said
“Well I’m going to give you something and you will have to tell me, truthfully, if it belongs to you. Easy right?”
“Mm-hmm”
“ Here,” he said taking out a few papers
I looked at it and read the first few sentences. I couldn’t hide my shock, it was my story, but how come he had it?
“ We found this beside the dead body, covered in blood. After doing some investigation, it seems like this was a story you have been working on and your classmates confirmed it”
“Yea, this is my story. So?” I asked pretending I didn’t know what was going on
“ Well, it describes how one of the characters dies and it’s exactly the same as what happened to your father”
“ So you think I killed my father?” I asked annoyed
“No, but don’t you think it’s a mystery at how this was beside the body and how the events resemble?”
“ It’s called a coincidence” I said now getting angry
“ Well until further proof I’m going to have to keep you story” he said taking the papers away from me
After he left, I didn’t know what to do. If he gathered enough evidence, then she could go to jail and there was nothing she could do.
I woke up in the middle of the night; beads of sweat trickling down my back. I walked into the kitchen to get a drink of water but as I opened the refrigerator, instead of the regular foods that are supposed to be in a fridge, there was Mrs. Front’s body squeezed into the tiny space. I screamed and in a moment Dana was by my side, her face frozen with shock. I recovered from my stunned reaction when I saw a few papers by the body side. I didn’t touch it instead I quickly called Mike and in a few minutes he was there already inspecting the body then the papers.

“ This is your story Alex,” he said
“ I never put it there, I didn’t even have it with me” I said trying to persuade him
“Well then can you explain how your story got here?” he asked pressing for details
“ I don’t know!” I said
“ It’s your story, you should know”
“ Well, I don’t!”
“ Look, Alex, if you confess now I’ll make sure your sentence isn’t too long but if you don’t I wont be ab-----“
“ Confess? About what? When I haven’t committed a crime why should I confess?”
“ I understand you might have been angry with your dad and Mrs. Front but it doesn’t mean you should kill them.”
“ I DID NOT KILL ANYONE!!!!!” I screamed, tears running down my cheeks. I wanted to go to sleep and wake up with everything normal; I wanted this horrible nightmare to end! NOW!
The officer had left later that morning promising that he’d be back to talk to me. Dana wouldn’t talk, eat or sleep; she just sat in a corner in her bedroom staring into space.
“ I didn’t kill her, you know that right?” I asked her later that evening. When she didn’t respond I turned around and started towards the door.
“ You have it too, just like your mom” she said her voice barely a whisper
“What?” I asked wanting her to keep going about anything as long as she talked.
“ A mental disorder”
“ My mom did not have a mental disorder!” I said getting angry
“ Yes, she did and you have it too” she said staring at me with cold eyes
“ I understand that you are upset because of your mom’s death but that doesn’t give you the right to say nonsense about my mother!” I said practically screaming
“ My mom told me all about it. She was close with your mom and she knew that your mom had a mental disorder, which made her act differently. If you don’t want to believe me, don’t but go meet Dr. Grey. She was your mom’s doctor, she’ll tell you all about it”
I knew Dana wasn’t right; she couldn’t be. My mom was perfectly normal and so am I but I wanted to go meet this doctor just so when she’d say, “ Oh, no honey, your mother was perfectly normal” I would slap that right in Dana’s face. That would show her!

I took a cab and went over to Dr. Grey’s office. She was busy with a patient so I had to wait.
“ Dr. Grey is ready to see you now,” the lady at the front desk said after a while.
“ Hello! You must be Alex!” Dr. grey said
“ Yea, how’d you know?” I asked kind of surprised
“ You have your mother’s face and you were so tiny the last time I saw you!”
“ Oh, I see”
“ Tell me, what can I do for you?”
“ I wanted to find out some things about my mom. Did my mom have a mental disorder?” I asked waiting for the “no” so I could go home and say “ ha! Dana! You were wrong!”
“ Umm..well…actually yes, yes she did. She had a split personality because of this disorder, which meant that if she did something bad she wouldn’t remember it”
“Could that something bad be as worse as a murder?”
“Yes and she wouldn’t even remember it! Usually though if a person with split personality kills someone he or she keeps one of the things that belongs to the victim”
“ Can it be passed onto the person’s children?”
“ Sometimes it will be passed on, sometimes it won’t”
“ Thank you,” I said leaving her office
I walked all the way back home thinking about what I’d just heard. There’d definitely be no proving Dana wrong. When I reached home, I went into Dana’s room and checked my backpack for any sign that would show that I’d killed Mrs. Front. I found something heavy and when I pulled it out I saw that it was a locket. A LOCKET that Mrs. Frost was wearing when she had come to pick Alex at the hospital!
“ Oh no!” I said out loud
“ I was right wasn’t I?” I turned to see Dana standing behind me but before I could realize what was happening, I felt dizzy again and everything went black
When I woke up, I was sitting on the couch in the living room and as I stood up I saw Dana’s body pinned to the wall; her eye sockets were empty, her throat and wrists slit and her left foot had a knife through it. I immediately called the officer and went to find a knife. My cheeks were wet with tears running down them. I didn’t want to hurt anyone else; if I kill myself everyone will be safe.
Suddenly someone grabbed me from behind, trying to choke me.
“ Hey, Alex!” it was a female voice; distinctly familiar. She pushed me down and when I turned I could see who it was.
“ You!” I said unable to believe she was standing here
“Its nice to see you remember you friend from the orphanage”
“ Why are you here?”
“ I couldn’t let you kill yourself after all the hard work I’ve done now could I?”
“What do you mean?” I asked
“ All those deaths? You weren’t the one who killed them. It was me” she said with a sinister laugh
“ What? You killed innocent people? Why?”
“Why?.. Because you stole my life! They had come to take me home with them and I would have gotten a nice home, loving family and a chance to go to school. Everything that I ever dreamt of but the day they came to get me you appeared in front of them and they rejected me and took you instead. Every year when you sent gifts to the orphanage on your birthday, everyone prayed that you have a long and wonderful life but I prayed that you died. So I failed the breaks of you car but instead of you, your mom died”
“ You killed my Mom?” I asked trying to grab her but she kicked me back down
“ I tried so many ways to kill you but they always failed. Then, I tried convincing you in different ways that you were going crazy and you almost would have but Mrs. Front said she couldn’t give you the drugs anymore, so I had to kill her. Poor lady, she was very nice but because of you…” she said kicking me hard in the ribs
“ Now I have to kill you. Finally my wish will come true after so many years of waiting” she said, a gun in her hand
“ No, please, no!” I pleaded
“ Hahahhhahaha..Say bye now little Alex” she said laughing wildly
>>>>>>>>>>>>BOOM!!!<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
I put my hands up in front of myself for protection but I felt nothing. I looked when I heard a second >>>>>>>>>>>>BOOM!<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
“ Killing innocent people just to get revenge, tsk tsk tsk” it was a familiar voice and when I looked up I saw that it was Mike
I ran over and hugged him, unable to stop crying. I pulled myself away from him
“ Thank you so much for saving my life!” I said
“ It was no problem” he said, a slight smirk on his face
As I looked past him, I saw her getting up again and I could tell she was about to shoot Mike.
“ LOOK OUT!” I screamed
I took his gun and shot her again and again and again until I was sure she was dead.
I had lost three people just because someone wanted to take revenge from me that dated back to when I was younger. After this case was cleaned up, I moved back into our old house. I started working on a novel during the free time I had. It got published a few months later and I got to travel almost all over the world. Now, I look back to that and wish that no one would have to go through anything like that experience.
